Smokestacks

Updated: 4 days ago

Baltimore was once a manufacturing hub for steel, ships, cars, electronics, chemicals, and other products, and although it has a primarily service-based economy today, evidence of its industrial past can can be seen throughout the city. These include lonely smokestacks that no longer operate, but continue to tower over nearby buildings. Below are photographs of a few of the smokestacks we have come across on our walks.

This is the old American Can Company's smokestack, which can be found in the Safeway parking lot that runs between Boston Street and Hudson Street in Canton. It's the source of the name of the Hudson Street Stackhouse, a bar with good food and a great beer selection.

Although it looks like a lighthouse, this is actually a smokestack that has been shortened and repainted. It stands on the edge of the Harbor next to the Lighthouse Point Marina. In the distance, you can see the smokestack above the Bayside Cantina.

This smokestack stands above the Bayside Cantina between the harbor and the Tindeco Wharf apartments. The path running towards the smokestack is the Baltimore Waterfront Promenade. You can find a picture and a video of the Promenade during a storm here.
